Лидер коллектива Йен Андерсон стал первым рок-музыкантом, регулярно использующим флейту. Группа начинала с исполнения блюз-рока, однако вскоре в их музыке появились влияния фолка, джаза и классической музыки. Группа названа в честь Джетро Талла — учёного-агротехника, жившего в Англии на рубеже XVII—XVIII веков и прославившегося изобретением усовершенствованной модели плуга-сеялки. Примечательным фактом является то, что в конструкции этого приспособления использовались элементы музыкального инструмента — орга́на. При том, что Jethro Tull всегда были далеки от мейнстрима, использовали крайне сложные аранжировки и писали необычные, замысловатые тексты, в 1970-х годах им сопутствовал и значительный коммерческий успех: 5 альбомов группы получили платиновый статус, 11 — золотой. Композиция «Aqualung» вошла в саундтрек к экстремальному скейт-видео «Fallen: Ride The Sky» к профайлу Билли Маркса, также она была в играх серии Rock Band. В цикле Стивена Кинга Тёмная Башня есть город Талл (англ. Tull). В одной из частей автор признается что взял название города от названия этой группы. Существует версия, что песня «Hotel California» (1976) из одноименного альбома группы The Eagles была написана под влиянием композиции «We Used to Know» из альбома Stand Up (1969). Группы гастролировали вместе до выпуска песни; кроме того, очень похожи мелодия и аккорды. Разумеется, идея песни «We used to know», выраженная в последней строке («But for your own sake remember times we used to know») весьма далека от комплекса идей, заключенных в «Hotel California», но в музыкальном плане «Hotel California» — это лишь чуть-чуть измененная «We used to know». Йен Андерсон на концертах в конце 70-х сам подчеркивал это, начиная играть «We Used to Know», а со второго куплета исполняя текст «Hotel California». В концертах весны 2011 года использовалась видеозапись трансляции с Международной космической станцией, в которой американская астронавтка Кэтрин Коулман исполнила партию флейты в одной из композиций группы под аккомпанемент музыкантов на сцене. Кроме того, Колман поприветствовала зрителей и поздравила публику и музыкантов Jethto Tull с Днем космонавтики. В 2004 году 66-летний бывший клавишник Jethro Tull Дэвид Палмер сменил пол, и стал женщиной по имени Ди Палмер. Иэн Андерсон был единственным, кто сразу принял его решение: "Я знал, что Дэвид последние два года собирался сделать операцию по изменению пола. Как и многие другие.
