Британская команда Cradle Of Filth была сформирована в 1991 году по инициативе вокалиста Дэни Филтса (Дэниел Дэйви; р. 25 июля 1973). Остальные музыканты в группе долго не задерживались, и за несколько первых лет в составе сменилось немало участников (впрочем, кадровая чехарда продолжалась и впоследствии). Что касается стиля, то курс был взят на норвежский блэк-метал образца Mayhem и Emperor. После четырех демо Cradle Of Filth наконец подписали контракт с Cacophonous Records, где дебютировали с альбомом "The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh". Несмотря на то, что работа являлась сыроватой, слушатели ее восприняли достаточно тепло, а в 2006-м журнал "Metal Hammer" включил "The Principle..." в Топ 10 блэк-альбомов последних 20 лет.

Отношения с Cacophonous у группы как-то не заладились, поэтому в 1996-м музыканты перебрались под крышу Music For Nations, предварительно исполнив контрактные обязательства перед старым лейблом с помощью EP "V Empire". Диск также был встречен неплохо, однако серьезный прорыв Cradle Of Filth совершили со следующей полнометражкой. Концептуальная работа "Dusk... And Her Embrace", посвященная вампиризму, была с восторгом воспринята по всей Европе, и продажи альбома оказались достаточно высокими.

Росту популярности способствовали европейские гастроли с шокирующе-театрализованными шоу и выпуск скандального мерчандайзинга с различными провокационными надписями. В 1998-м вышел еще один концептуальный альбом, "Cruelty And The Beast", построенный на легенде о "кровавой графине" Элизабет Бэтори. Продюсированием диска занимались сами музыканты, и видимо поэтому качество звука получилось неважное, что обусловило в начале низкий объем продаж. На следующий год группа много гастролировала, однако успела записать видео "PanDaemonAeon" и выпустить EP "From The Cradle To Enslave". Четвертая полнометражка подоспела в 2000 году как раз на праздник Хэллоуин. Основанный на произведении Клайва Баркера, альбом "Midian" отличался повышенной мелодичностью и стал поворотной точкой в творчестве Cradle Of Filth. Старые поклонники обвиняли группу в продажности, однако численность аудитории "крэдлов" заметно выросла.

В 2001-м вышел EP "Bitter Suites To Succubi", изданный на собственном лейбле команды и состоявший из трех перезаписанных треков с "The Principle...", парочки инструменталок и кавера Sisters of Mercy "No Time To Cry". Два следующих релиза представляли собой сборник "бестов" "Lovecraft & Witch Hearts" и концертник "Live Bait For The Dead".

В 2003-м Cradle Of Filth заключили мажорный контракт с Sony и дебютировали на новом месте с работой "Damnation And A Day". Запись была проведена с участием профессионального хора и венгерского оркестра "Budapest Film Orchestra", а в качестве текстовой основы было использовано произведение Джона Мильтона "Paradise Lost". Симфо-металлическое звучание "Damnation And A Day" пришлось по вкусу не всем. Sony поспешила избавиться от своих подопечных, и "крэдлы" ушли работать на Roadrunner. Диск 2004 года "Nymphetamine" стал первой полнометражкой со времен "The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh", не связанной какой-либо концепцией. В музыкальном же плане, по выражению бас-гитариста Дэйва Пибаса, этот альбом представлял собой нечто среднее между "Cruelty..." и "Damnation...".

Примерно в том же духе была выдержана и следующая работа, "Thornography". Запись диска проходила в линкольнширской Chapel Studios, продюсированием занимался Роб Кадджиано (Anthrax, Bleeding Through), а за микшерским пультом сидел экс-участник Sabbat Энди Снип.
"Thornography", на заголовке которого было написано: "Представляет человеческую одержимость грехом и эгоизмом. Скопировано с Dark-World.ru... склонность к само-наказанию или чего-нибудь равному... мания". Уже после релиза "Thornography" Филтсу пришлось расстаться со своим давним партнером, барабанщиком Адрианом Эрландссоном, который решил сосредоточиться на других проектах.

В октябре 2008 группа выпустила свой десятый полноформатный альбом "Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder", чья концепция была посвещанна жизни Жиля де Рэ, французского маршала XV века, который был обвинён Инквизицией в ереси, поклонении Сатане и ритуальных жертвоприношениях и казнён. В следующем году к группе присоединилась клавишница Abigail Williams Эшли Юргемаер. Так же в Cradle Of Filth вернулся гитарист Джеймс МакИллрой.

В апреле 2010 группа перешла на Peaceville Records и приступила к записи нового, одиннадцатого альбома "Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa", который вышел 1 ноября 2010. Лирика альбома посвящена Лилит, первой жене Адама, а некоторые песни рассказывают о Древнегреческой мифологии и Ордене Тамплиеров.
