Крис МакКартер (вокал, гитара, программинг) и Дино Молинаро (бас) начали писать песни ещё учениками старшей школы в 1988-м, воодушевлённые своей любовью к альтернативной музыке. В 1991-м изначальное название группы - Death in the Dark - было изменено на Ikon. Майкл Кэрродус был первым вокалистом коллектива и учавствовал в создании первых двух альбомов - In the shadow of the angel (1994) и Flowers for the gathering (1996), которые и обратили на Ikon внимание любителей готической музыки в Европе и Америке, где записи распространялись через лейблы Apollyon и Metropolis. Музыкальный журналист Мик Мерсер справедливо назвал их "пионерами современности готического жанра".

Группа продолжила развивать свой музыкальный стиль после ухода Кэрродуса в 1997-м. И следующий альбом This quiet Earth (1998) ознаменовал развитие музыкального выражения МакКартера, выдав теперь уже полюбившуюся клубную классику - "Subversion" и "Ghost in my head". Не смотря на то, что добавление электронных элементов на альбоме встряхнули некоторых фанов раннего звучания, вдохновлённого творчеством Joy Division, смесь традиционного рока Ikon с электроникой доказали оригинальность команды и выделили её из цикла исполнителей того периода, которые продолжали уныло подражать группам первой готической волны.

On the edge of forever (2001) был наполнен желанием МакКартера вновь вернуться к живому исполнению и внести энергию полного состава группы в музыку. После успешного тура ребят пригласили сыграть на другом фестивале, M'era Luna в 2002 году, их лица оказались на одной афише с London after midnight, Soft cell и H.I.M., а позже состоялось и первое из трёх посещений Wave Gotik treffen в 2003-м.

После того ошеломительно успешного периода международных выступлений Ikon вновь вернулись к оригинальному составу - МакКартер и Молинаро, с присоединившимся впервые Клиффордом Эннисом (соучастник МакКартера на альбоме The book of days их совместного проекта Jerusalem syndrome, 1997). Коллектив выпустил высоко оценённый E.P. Psychic vampire (2004), ставший и оставшийся по сей день крупнейшим бестселлером среди синглов группы и ознаменовавший собой переход к мощному, агрессивному рок-звуку. Этот релиз стал свидетельством совершенствования написания песен МакКартера, отточенного в течение года путешествий по миру.

Этот E.P. оказался идеально подготовленным фундаментом для одного из самых ярких альбомов Ikon - Destroying the world to save it (2005), который способствовал чартовому успеху как в Native 25 (в "Лучшем альбоме 2005 года" дебютировал под номером 21 в выпуске 8 за май 2005), так и в DAC ("Rome" - десятый номер в хит-параде синглов). Альбом закрепил за Ikon репутацию не только пионеров жанра, но также достойных и современных предводителей сцены, на которой доминировали EBM/индастриал коллективы.

Love, hate and sorrow, шестой студийный альбом Ikon, был выпущен в 2009 году и породил четыре сингла, один DVD и два видеоклипа. Black magazine назвал первый сингл "A line on a dark day" второй лучшей песней 2008 года, она также получила звание полуфиналистки Всемирного Конкурса Песни. Отзывы об альбоме получились всесторонне восторженными, и поклонники тоже тепло восприняли самый мелодичный релиз группы на сегодняшний день.

В 2010-м Ikon собрались в своём самом сильном живом составе, приняв обратно Энниса и Бёрнса и отыграв два единовременных австралийских выступления - с H.I.M. и Christian death. В честь двадцатилетия группы этот состав снова посещает Европу в 2011 году и вновь появляется на Wave Gotik treffen. Ребята переиздали востребованные дебютные альбомы In the shadow of the angel и Flowers for the gathering четырёхдисковыми комплектами (3 CD + DVD), эти альбомы увековечены и на цветном виниле. Новый лейбл, с которым сотрудничают Ikon - Echozone - также предоставляет двухдисковые варианты, и четырёхдисковые ограниченным тиражом.

Будущее Ikon сулит новые записи с участием энергичной и креативной четвёрки, уже работающей над новыми демо. Группа также планирует продолжение линейки переизданий альбомами This quiet Earth и On the edge of forever, ремастерированными в 2012-м. Поклонники таким образом могут оценить превосходное сочетание старого и нового, классику прошлого Ikon и перспективы будущего.
