Handel himself was the particular favorite of George I. That monarch had awarded British citizenship to the German-born composer two years before. The King's death in summer 1727, however, signalled an end to Handel's Unchallenged reign as first in a field of esteemed opera composers in London. Although the city's fickle public was tiring of imported divas, they could still be excited by flaring temperaments, and willingly fanned the flames of rivalry. The Italian castrati were beginning to fade from fashion. These rare birds were now as much ridiculed in London as they were pampered. The local press - both daily publications and satirical pamphlets - began to treat Handel's singers cruelly. Handel's Singers The male alto castrato, Senesino, had captivated London audiences for more than a decade; Handel created many title roles for him. The castrato had always been a controversial figure, as much celebrated for pure, perfect vocal production and seamless coloratura phrases as he was disdained for his unnaturalness, puffed ego and public preening. By the mid-l720's, the presence of a gifted castrato onstage wasn't enough to satisfy the jaded public's appetites. The soprano diva, imported from Italy was a1so a prerequisite. Indeed, London audiences now required not one but two rival soprani onstage to whip them into a frenzy. Francesca Cuzzoni was a short, "lumpish and stiff" singer with "a wonderful high-soaring" soprano voice. She is reported, by Handel biographer Herbert Weinstock, to have had an effortless technique (spanning the two octaves from low to high C) which lasted throughout a career of more than three decades. Upon her arrival on the London scene six seasons before Siroe, Cuzzoni had straight away impressed her temperament on Handel. He composed the elaoorate aria "Falsa imagine" for her in Ottone; she refused to sing it. The closing night of the 1727 season, the rivalry reached a culmination. Despite the presence of several members of the royal family, the crowds at the King's Theatre were rowdy. Both sopranos were appearing in the final performance of an opera by Bononcini. Factional booing and hissing greeted the onstage arrival of each lady. A fight broke out in the audience and grew to such proportions that several participants leapt onto the stage. Whipped to lyric fury, the two divas went at each other's elaborate hairpieces. Coiffures were clawed to a tangle. Faustina was described - and this event was widely and endlessly reported in every quarter of the city - as every bit as bloodthirsty a combattant as La Cuzzoni. One London writer wryly suggested that the ladies hire a hall and slug it out in public, with the "best woman taking the house receipts." Cuzzoni's London reign was challenged in 1726 by the arrival from Venice of Faustina Bordoni, wife to composer Johann Hasse. She was a singer with a lower range (B-flat below middle C to the G above the next octave) more typical of today' s mezzo-soprano. Faustina was, reportedly, a more cultivated individual than Cuzzoni. But Weinstock s description does sound biased: "a woman of commanding intelligence, proverbially sweet disposition and compelling character who made Cuzzoni seem the merest, sweet-warbling viper." The composer Johann Quantz, visiting London the season before Siroe's premiere, was similarly smitten: "Faustina is born for singing and acting!" It should, nevertheless, be added that Faustina's Italian nickname, "La nuova Sirena" may not have derived from her captivating looks alone. Indeed, she did nothing to quiet the furor which surrounded her and her rival Cuzzoni. Handel publically labelled the sopranos "hussies" for their hair-raising behavior, then promptly hired both for the following season. And despite the Royal Academy's half-hearted attempt to fire Signora Cuzzoni (some - but not all - felt she had initiated the brawl), the public insisted on her immediate re-instatement. Handel's Plans for Siroe In early January 1728 George Frederic Handel began composition on a new work to be based on the life of Genserich, the medieval King of the Vandals. The title role of Genserico was slated for the celebrated bass Giuseppe Boschi, who had sung in London since Handel's first days in that city. But by the end of the month he set aside this work only half-complete, turning instead to a popular libretto he had just received from the Italian poet Pietro Metastasio: Siroe, re di Persia. Three Genserico arias found their way into the pages of Siroe, Act I. A fourth (Laodice's air "Ormiperdo") was inserted and later omitted by Handel. Boschi was to sing the bass role, Cosroe, the King of Persia; Senesino, his son Siroe. The two principal soprano roles were to fall to Faustina and Cuzzoni. This dazzling cast had already brought Handel success in past seasons. But in 1728 his finances were a shambles. The Royal Academy's popularity had dwindled to the point where no permanent subscriptions nad been purchased for that season. Ticket sales and the occasional, desperate levy on the Board of Directors and Governors provided the only income. But with his starry casting, a new score and exciting libretto, Handel had high hopes for Siroe's premiere. Bad luck intervened. The Beggar's Opera Three weeks before the February 17,1728 premiere of Handel's Siroe, rival composer Johann Christoph Pepusch and the brilliant satirist/librettist John Gay introduced to London The Beggar's Opera, an English-language operetta. Eschewing foreign tongues, lofty monarchs and high-flown affairs of state, theirs was a "bawdy and vulgar work with great tunes and witty texts." It was, in H. Robbins Landon's description, "thoroughly English: everyone could understand the words. It was the death knell for Handel's operas and the Italian singers." While Pepusch did openly rob tunes from Purcell and from Handel himself (the March from Rinaldo was lifted intact), The Beggar's Opera did not specifically parody Handel's operas. Charles Cudworth: "It is of a different genre and owed its initial success more as a satire of Prime Minister Robert Walpole than of Handel." Nevertheless, the public stayed away from the King's Theatre in droves, flocking instead to hear performances of Gay' s work. Polly Peachum - and not Handel's heroines - was on everyone's lips. Now references to Faustina and company were apt to be satirical. One wag pamphleteer lampooned the Italians soon after The Beggar's Opera opened: "Go where you will, the subject still Is pretty, pretty Polly. There's Madame Faustina, Catso! And else Madama Catsoni. Likewise Signior Senesino Are tutti abbandoni" The Siroe Premiere It was in this infertile climate that George Frideric Handel premiered his Italian opera on February 17, 1728. Fearful of public impatience with his score's excessively long secco recitatives (sung dialogue with only keyboard/ cello accompaniment), Handel shortened them for the premiere--where and how much we do not know. Chrysander does not specify. King George II, Queen Caroline, and three of their daughters were in attendance. The performance was not a success: bedragled, second-hand sets, inadequate rehearsal and miserable attendance did not help matters. Siroe did find some champions. A London writer chastized the public for rushing to "the miserable low scenes of B-R'S O-A, while Siroe is performed to almost Empty Benches." A wealthy patroness, much impressed with Handel's new score, wrote to her friend, Lady Newdigate: "May your Honour leave as soon as she can her work looms and, having concluded a truce with embroidery, come to hear this beautiful opera. I am sure that Jove in his Olympian feats has not had such an elegant diversion." Modern scholars have also been complimentary. Dean admired the work, especially the secco scenes: "these are extremely good, as Handel has really well-written dialogue to set to music." While Weinstock and others have claimed that "much of the music" was lifted from Handel's own Flavio, a routine examination of that 1723 score shows no such borrowing. Siroe played 18 performances (a nineteenth was cancelled) on Tuesdays and Saturdays through the end of April 1728. Signora Cuzzoni was by this time almost seven months pregnant, yet was still singing as beautifully onstage as she was behaving badly offstage. She is said to have spread salacious rumors about Faustina Bordoni's character, gossip she continued to monger after the two ladies left London and Handel's employ, importing their feud to Paris and then Venice to, one assumes, unabated public delight. Back in London, the Royal Academy collapsed altogether from lack of public delight a scant eight weeks after the final performance of Siroe. Handel's singers deserted him instantly and fled to the Continent. Siroe was thereafter performed only twice (at Brunswick in August 1730 and there again, finally, January 29, 1735). Handel did "borrow" two arias from the score for use in a pastiche Roxana twenty years later. From that time until, presumably, the present, Siroe has been ignored. The Score Siroe is composed for five solo singers (a sixth, the bass role Arasse, appears only briefly in the recitative scenes) and a chamber orchestra of strings, oboes, and continuo. The opera runs to three shortish acts and contains no chorus. The single, concluding "Coro" is in fact sung by the soloists. The standard 18th-century pattern of French-style overture, followed by a succession of alternating secco recitatives and dacapo arias, prevails in Siroe. Handel's writing for the solo voices gives a clear picture of the specific strengths and weaknesses of his celebrated cast. Senesino was noted for his heartfelt laments and long florid passages. but also for a limited vocal range (his alto role barely exceeds an octave in scope). The noble and fury airs given to the King were ideal for the bass Boschi. His great Act III scene and dacapo aria" Gelido in ogni vena" has been singled out as the finest music in the score. For his rival sopranos, the composer was under strict contract to provide exactly equal and identically showcasing music. Yet it is easy to discern that Emira's delicate traceries, lower range and more complex stage character specifically suited Faustina's capacities, and the more powerful, high-lying coloratura for Laodice befitted Cuzzoni's stronger soprano. The Siroe Libretto Handel's libretto has a more elaborate history than his score. Written in 1726 by the legendary Metastasio, Siroe, re di Persia was only that poet's second attempt at an opera text. In a mere two seasons Siroe had been set by no fewer than six Italian composers (Vinci, Gristomo, Popora, Sarri, Porla and Antonio Vivaldi each proauced a version.) No-one in London had heard any these works. But intrigued by the text, George Frideric Handel - as noted - interrupted work on one opera to turn to Metastasio's libretto. He convinced a writer-colleague, Nicola Haym, to shorten the original text. Paul Henry Lang compliments Siroe: "Its language is clear, poetic and easy to set. These clear and forceful lines prompted Handel to write the many recitatives that are dramatic and imaginative. In fact, the dramatic tone as opposed to the lyric dominates this opera. The plot runs roughly parallel to Shakespeare's Lear: 'the King of Persia, Cosroe, wishes to abdicate. He seeks an oath of allegiance from his two sons, intending to decide between them. One son, Medarse, disguising his own evil nature, swears his fidelity. The other, Siroe, who has served his father faithfully, is offended by this request and will not swear. The deluded King rebuffs Siroe and embraces Medarse. Matters are complicated by the intervention of a male courtier, Idaspe, supposedly Cosroe's trusted confidant but in fact the disguised Cambian princess Emira, sworn enemy of King Cosroe and secret lover of his son Siroe. Emira wants Siroe to prove his love and avenge her by slaying the father. When the horrified Siroe refuses, Emira vows to assassinate the King herself. Desperate to alert Cosroe but without betraying his lover; Siroe writes an anonymous letter warning the King of the plot. The evil brother claims the letter as his own and accuses Siroe of complicity in the plot. Confronted, Siroe cannot reveal the truth and is therefore himself blamed. He is also the object of the affections of Princess Laodice. When Siroe spurns her, she too turns on him. Cosroe gives his son many chances to confess and repent o rreveal the other plotters. Siroe still refuses to speak. Rival factions, some supporting the Prince, others his father, threaten civil war. Pushed to the limit, the King condemns his son to death. The trusted General Arasse reports Siroe's execution. Hearing this, Emira explodes, throws off her disguise and reveals both her own identity and Siroe's innocence. Cosroe is horrified. After many further developments, matters resolve happily: Arasse confesses that he did not have the heart to kill Siroe. The Prince, in good health, is reunited with his father; the bad brother and the petulant Laodice are remorseful; Emira agrees to put her criminal tendencies behind her. The King passes the crown to Siroe and all ends in a choral declaration of hope and happiness. The Current Edition Handel's Siroe score - unlike many of his others - is clear and quite straightforward. There are no alternate airs to decide upon, no incomplete recitatives, very few options which complicate other Handel Italian manuscripts. Preparing a modern performance edition and translating the forceful, uncomplicated Haym text proved a fairly simple task. Both the Handel original (on microfilm in New York) and the exhaustive, careful Friedrich Chysander 19th-century complete works are very legible. Handel's string bowings are unusually specific and handsomely marked, as are his occasional dynamic and tempo specifications. Indeed, the score has basically been available and easily accessible to anyone interested in performing it.
