This broadcast of Alceste brought us Rose Bampton replacing Marjorie Lawrence who, though scheduled, was unable to sing. This was, on one hand, a great loss, as Marjorie Lawrence was an extraordinary soprano, admired for her singing of the title role. On the other hand, this preservation offers Bampton in what may be her greatest singing on record; surpassing, perhaps, Lawrence in the nobility of her characterization and in the classical stature of her singing. In view of the rich repertoire which was offered in the 1940-41 season, it was entirely admirable of the Met to add another early opera from the baroque period to the Orfeo which was mounted with Thorborg and Novotna.
Bampton brings the music to life. Warren is the other asset, though he lacks the requisite style and his voice is rather thick for communicating the French language in so immense an opera-house, nevertheless, he is in magnificent voice, singing music not usually associated with him at the beginning of his famed Met career. Maison is more than acceptable as King Admetus, believable, stylish, but since his was never a very distinguished voice, nothing he sings is memorable.
Nevertheless, for what the New York Sun termed a "loftily conceived and often deeply moving score", the entire endeavour was commendable, the reviewer concluding that the generation which could hear both Orpheus and Alceste in the course of a season or two could count itself fortunate. We join that fortunate radio audience.

This derives from the first master-tape made of the NBC transcription discs between 1948 and 1949 and acquired under written authority from dated May 1983. There were 16" transcriptions which we seamelessly edited together and pitch-corrected. Dr Irwin Elkins was a central figure in obtaining the source material on which we worked.
