PERFORMER "Puccini" FLAGS DCP INDEX 01 48:47:63 TRACK 17 AUDIO TITLE "Avevo ben ragione" PERFORMER "Puccini" FLAGS DCP INDEX 01 51:17:11 Puccini has long been the leading composer on the operatie hit parade, with La Bohème, Tósca and Madama Butterfly topping the charts. In recent years, his once-neglected final (and unfinished) opera, Turandot, has joined the winner's circle thanks to a number of factors, led by increasing exposure of the thrilling tenor aria "Nessun dorma." Inquire of alleged Puccini lovers, however, and you will find many who have never heard of Il tabarro ("The Cloak"), or at least can tell you nothing about it; yet there are many connoisseurs of Puccini's work-and some who ordinarily shun it-who will name this short opera as his most authentic masterpiece. IL tabarro is treasured by practiced listeners for the precision and subtlety of both its musical score and its dramatic structure. Puccini is incomparable here in setting scene, delincating character, and building to a climax. In one of his most sophisticated and modern scores he brilliantly evokes the flowing waters of the Seine and the sinister foreboding, the monotony and terror, that can afflict the lives of common folk. A myriad of thoughtful details are masterfully interwoven to create a seamless, organic whole that unfolds smoothly and effectively from the opening bars to the final chords. There is na dearth of verismic shock value, yet this work has never captured the imagination of the wider public as has Tosca, a work similar in dramatic style and force. In fact, it has fared less well than the other two one-act operas forming Il trittico, Puccini's triptych which also inc1udes Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. The composer had wanted to combine three short operas into a single evening's entertainment for some years, and Il tabarro was the first of the triptych to be composed. It was inspired by the play La houppelande ("The Cloak") by Didier Gold, which Puccini had seen in Paris in 1912. Giuseppe Adami adapted it as an opera libretto and Puccini completed the score in 1916. In the next two years he created its companion pieces, and Il trittico had its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, on December 14, 1918. The publisher Ricordi had been opposed to the idea of a triple bill from the beginning, and his doubts were to a degree justified: The three operas have seldom since been performed together. More commonly two of them make up a double bill, or one is paired with a short opera by some other composer, in the manner of " Cav and Pag." lronically, the most famous aria in Il tabarro is "Scorri, fiume eterno" ("Flow on, eternal river"), a monologue for Michele-which Puccini later ordered cut from the score as holding up the action.
