When it was originally broadcast in 1972, I was participating in a family function and what to wait (rather impatiently as I remember) to get home, tune in to the Theatre Saturday Matinee broadcast, and listen eagerly from the end of the Sachs/Beckmesser exchanges in Act 2 to the end of the opera. I had a tape of that partial broadcast, and the warm sound and magisterial conducting by Thomas Schippers gave me a very different idea of the opera than I had understood. I was a mere 15 years, and had heard my first broadcast of TRISTAN with Nilsson, Thomas, Dalis, Dooley and Tozzi with Leinsdorf conducting the previous season ( a terrific choice for Sony should they decide to dig into the vaults more deeply into Wagner territory). These performances allowed me to reassess my thoughts about these long masterpieces. The vibrant and very vivid characterization of every singer in this cast showed the love of conductor Schippers for this score. He lovingly and deeply details each moment with superb flow and a light touch which supports the encounter between characters in a very direct manner. The opening to Act 3 has quiet radiance, falling very gratefully on the ear without pomposity or over exaggeration of the depths of Sach's musings. I many times find this moment in particular to be very heavy handed in the work of others, so this particular version I feel is ideal in balance. There is a bounce to the orchestra that I do not find in the work of others, though others may bring different qualities to the fore with their own viewpoint. This makes the celebration in Act 3 scene 2 utterly joyful in the best sense. I played it again and again and again as a kid. And now, with the superb engineering of this set, I'll be able to do that yet again! The sound balance is very nice, though there were a few moments where I felt the singer was too close to microphones so their tone sounded harsh, and a moment or two of slight distortion in Adam's voice because of the heaviness and power of his instrument. Mr. Adam brings a wonderfully round interpretation to the performance and he allows us to feel the depth of his feelings as well as strength, purpose, foresight and kindness. James King as Walther truly sounds heroic with a bright and shining voice of real power, wedded to an intelligence that communicates subtleties of text and nuance. This comment could easily extend to every member of the cast. Loren Driscoll makes me forget how long his monolog in the first act can be, by truly entertaining me with a wonderful, secure voice endowed with a unique timbre very much to my liking. Pilar Lorengar shines in a spicy, almost sassy performance reminding me that Eva has a grittiness of her own, willing to take some risks in a world not advocating change. Benno Kusche has created a tone for the character of Beckmesser that actually makes me smile : he just sounds funny before he has even done a thing. It is the kind of vocal acting which I prize. A very agreeable sound that communicates the tortured, ridiculous moments without rancor, so the humor is always seeping through. Love Shirley Love as Magdalene, with a juicy sound wedded to a thorough understanding of each moment allowing every second to truly count for this catalyzing character. For the reservations I have of the set - it took more than 35 years until I could hear Act 1 and most of Act 2 due to a SIrius broadcast in the past few years. Most of my reservations concern Act 1, where the buildup after Walter's second song to the end of the act is somewhat tepid. I heard the notes flying by, yet don't quite get the feeling of things becoming a REAL cantankerous mess with utter pandemonium. It sounds good, yet not frenzied enough for my taste. The other concern has to do with Ezio Flagello's beautifully sonorous voice as Pogner, illuminating a basic character without the wealth of detail I feel from the rest of the cast. It is a professional assumption of a role, yet not magical the way I feel of the other singers, yet not enough to make it seem a liability. Very respectable. The rest is magic. Particularly the Act 1 prelude with a middle section so flowingly and sincerely articulated that the sunny, deep character of the opera emerges triumphantly. At the end, the joy of the choruses, the dances for the guilds and the apprentices with the outpouring of love for Sachs by the community is excitingly communicated across the footlights to a truly excited reception. And now, through these cds, we can feel it too.
