Родился 2 февраля 1875 в Вене. В возрасте трех с половиной лет мальчик уже знал ноты, в семь лет поступил в Венскую консерваторию, в десять – получил консерваторскую золотую медаль и был принят в Парижскую консерваторию. Занимался по классу скрипки у Ж.Массара и по композиции у Л.Делиба. Он завоевал Большой приз консерватории в 12 лет, в 14 – дал первый концерт в США с Бостонским симфоническим оркестром и затем совершил успешное турне по Америке с пианистом М.Розенталем.
На некоторое время Крейслер оставил скрипку, занявшись медициной (отец музыканта был врачом), отслужил положенный срок в австрийской армии и затем вернулся к музыке. В 19 лет он сочинил ставшие потом знаменитыми каденции к скрипичному концерту Бетховена, опубликовал Классические рукописи (Klassische Manuskripte) – серию скрипичных пьес, стилизованных под известных мастеров: например, Andantino, приписанное Дж.Б.Мартини, Шансон Людовика XIII и Павану, якобы принадлежавшие Ф.Куперену. Мировую славу принесло Крейлеру его первое выступление с Берлинским филармоническим оркестром в 1899. В 1923–1925 он совершил гастрольные поездки по Востоку, Австралии, Новой Зеландии. После прихода к власти нацистов Крейслер переселился в Париж (1933–1939), а в 1939 – в Нью-Йорк. В апреле 1941 попал в автомобильную аварию и получил серьезную травму, но спустя 18 месяцев вернулся к концертной деятельности. Крейслер ушел с эстрады в 1950. Умер Крейслер в Нью-Йорке 29 января 1962.
