PETER SCHREIER
Peter Schreier was born in Meißen in 1935. At age often he entered the boarding school of the famous Dresdner Kreuzchor, a boys' choir, where he sung many solo alto parts. Later he studied singing and conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Dresden. Peter Schreier made his professional debut in 1959 and became a regular member of the company in 1961 and in 1963 at Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden as its leading lyric tenor. Peter Schreier quickly won acclaim in particular for his portrayals of Mozart's main tenor roles and as a recitalist. He made numerous guest appearances in Vienna, Bayreuth, New Yorkand Milano. For 25 years, beginning in 1967, he took part in the program of the annual Salzburg Festival. Peter Schreier's keen interest in the oratorio has earned him an international reputation as a concert singer. He has also won acclaim as an incomparable performer of the Lied including the Lieder of Schubert and Schumann. Since 1979 Peter Schreier has also been a conductor.
Peter Schreier received numerous honours, honorary memberships and the title of "Kammersänger" by the governments of the former GDR, Bavaria and Austria. In December 2005 he finished his singing career in a performance of Bach's Christmas Oratorio in Prague. He lives in Dresden.
ERIK WERBA
Erik Werba was born on 25 May 1918 in Baden near Vienna. He studied classical philology and musicology at the University of Vienna, piano with Oskar Dachs, composition with Joseph Marx and music theory at the Musikakademie. Erik Werba completed his studies in 1940 and was awarded a PhD. He wrote music reviews for daily newspapers and published biographies of Richard Strauss, Joseph Marx and Hugo Wolf. After the Second World War Erik Werba took over as director of the Vienna Mozart Community and co-founded the journal "Musikerziehung" (Music Education). From 1949 he was a professor at the Academy of Music, in 1953 he became a member of the editorial office of the "Österreichische Musikzeitschrift" (Austrian Music Journal). In this period he began his international career as piano accompanist for renowned singers such as Irmgard Seefried, Christa Ludwig, Walter Berry, Peter Schreier. Werba's classes in Vienna on lied interpretation focusing on Schubert and Wolf, as well as master-classes in the USA, in Japan and Australia were much in demand and overbooked.
Erik Werba was a man of many interests and a highly educated artist; he received many national and international awards. Erik Werba died on 9 April 1992 in Hinterbrühl near Mödling in Austria.
