Мариан Андерсон родилась в одном из цветных кварталов Филадельфии, в 12-ти летнем возрасте лишилась отца, воспитывалась матерью. Уже с ранних лет у нее проявились певческие способности. Девочка пела в церковном хоре одной из баптистских церквей Филадельфии. О своих трудных жизненных и певческих 'университетах' Андерсон подробно рассказывает в автобиографической книге 'Господи, что за утро' (1956, Нью-Йорк), фрагменты которой опубликованы в 1965 году в нашей стране (Сб. 'Исполнительское искусство зарубежных стран', М., 1962 г.).
После учебы у известного педагога Джузеппе Богетти (среди его учеников Ж.Пирс), а затем в вокальной студии Ф. Ла Форжа (воспитавшего М.Таллей, Л.Тиббетта и других известных певцов) Андерсон дебютирует на концертной эстраде в 1925 году, впрочем, без особого успеха. После победы на певческом конкурсе, организованном Нью-Йоркским филармоническим оркестром, Национальная ассоциация негритянских музыкантов предоставляет возможность молодой артистке продолжить учебу в Англии, где ее талант был замечен знаменитым дирижером Генри Вудом. В 1929 году Андерсон дебютирует в Карнеги-холле. Однако расовые предрассудки мешали певице заслужить всеобъемлющее признание американской элиты. Она вновь уезжает в Старый свет. В 1930 в Берлине начинаются ее триумфальные европейские гастроли. Мариан продолжает совершенствовать свое мастерство, берет ряд уроков у известной малеровской певицы мадам Шарль Кайе. В 1935 году Андерсон выступает с концертом на Зальцбургском фестивале. Именно там ее мастерство привело в восторг Тосканини. В 1934-35 гг. она посещает СССР.
В 1935 году, по инициативе Артура Рубинштейна в Париже происходит знаменательная встреча Мариан Андерсон с великим импресарио, выходцем из России, Солом Юроком (настоящее имя уроженца Брянщины - Соломон Гурков). Он сумел пробить брешь в менталитете американцев, использовав для этого Мемориал Линкольна. 9 апреля 1939 года 75 000 человек у мраморных ступеней Мемориала внимало пению великой певицы, ставшей с этих пор символом борьбы за расовое равноправие. С тех пор принимать у себя Мариан Андерсон почитали за честь президенты США Рузвельт, Эйзенхауэр, позднее Кеннеди. Блестящая концертная карьера артистки, в репертуаре которой были вокально-инструментальные и камерные произведения Баха, Генделя, Бетховена, Шуберта, Шумана, Малера, Сибелиуса, сочинения Гершвина и многие др., завершилась 18 апреля 1965 года в Карнеги-холле. Умерла великая певица 8 апреля 1993 года в Портленде.
Лишь единственный раз за всю свою карьеру выдающаяся негритянская дива обратилась к жанру оперы. В 1955 году она стала первой негритянкой, выступившей в 'Метрополитен Опера'. Это произошло в годы директорства знаменитого Рудольфа Бинга. Вот как он сам описывает этот знаменательный факт:
'Появление госпожи Андерсон - первой в истории театра негритянской певицы, исполнительницы главных партий, на сцене 'Метрополитен' - это один из тех моментов в моей театральной деятельности, которыми я более всего горжусь. Я хотел это сделать, начиная с первого года моего пребывания в 'Метрополитен', но только в 1954 году у нас появилась подходящая партия - Ульрика в 'Бале-маскараде', - требующая мало действия и, следовательно, немногочисленных репетиций, что важно для артистки, чрезвычайно занятой концертной деятельностью, причем для этой партии было не так существенно, что голос певицы уже не находился в расцвете.
И при всем этом ее приглашение оказалось возможным только благодаря счастливой случайности: на одном из приемов, устроенных Солом Юроком для балета 'Сэдлерс Уэллс', я сидел возле нее. Мы тут же обсудили вопрос об ее ангажементе, и все было устроено в течение нескольких дней. Попечительский совет 'Метрополитен Опера' не фигурировал в числе тех многочисленных организаций, которые прислали свои поздравления, когда эта новость стала известна...'. 9 октября 1954 года газета 'Ньй-Йорк таймс' извещает читателей о подписании контракта театра с Андерсон.
А 7 января 1955 года состоялся исторический дебют великой американской дивы в главном театре Соединенных Штатов. В премьере принимал участие ряд выдающихся оперных певцов: Ричард Такер (Ричард), Зинка Миланова (Амелия), Леонард Уоррен (Ренато), Роберта Питерс (Оскар). За дирижерским пультом стоял один из крупнейших дирижеров 20 века Димитриос Митропулос.
