Проект был создан в 1989 году Ави Ниссимом и Лиором Перлмуттером, первоначально он носил название SFX. Выступали они в основном в «андеграунде», и добились первого успеха в 1991 с синглом Monster Mania. Дуэт в 1992 году переехал в США, где они выпустили сингл JBIE под своим собственным лейблом "XRave Records". Но не добившись особого успеха, в 1993 Ниссим вернулся в Израиль, где сначала работал с Янивом Хавивом (Yaniv Haviv), с которым они пробовали в 13 лет свой первый проект "Paradox", и Гаем Себбагом (Guy Sebbag). Вместе они выпустили сингл — Another World. В начале 1994 Лиор вернулся, и ребята, называя себя все еще SFX, выпустили свой первый сборник Trust in Trance Vol. 1. После чего Гай покинул коллектив. В 1995 ребята, наконец, открыли свою собственную профессиональную студию, на которой уже под названием Astral Projection выпустили свой второй сборник Trust in Trance vol. 2, который вошел в список самых продаваемых альбомов в Израиле, заняв там вторую строчку. Тогда проект Astral Projection представлял собой трио, в которых входили Ави Ниссим, Лиор Перлмуттер и Янив Хавив. Первым же диском полностью составленным из треков Astral Projection стал The Astral Files. Немногим позже японская студия "Avex Records" выпустила сборник The Mix, составленный из ремиксов Ави на лучшие треки Astral Projection. К концу 1997 года коллектив выпускает Dancing Galaxy. К этому времени Хавив изменил свои взгляды в музыке и уже покинул группу, так Astral Projection стал дуэтом Ниссима и Перлмуттера. В 1998 году ребята выпустили под прежним названием SFX альбом —- The Unreleased Tracks 89-94, в который вошли все их ранние хиты. В самом начале 1999 года они выпустили сборник Trust in Trance - The Next Millenium, в который вошли несколько новых треков, а также часть ремиксов на старые. В феврале 1999 года выпущен сборник Another World, который содержал ремикс на одноименный сингл, а также ремиксы на Trllithon's Trance Dance. В мае 2000 года Astral Projection выпускает диск In the Mix, который благодаря плавному переходу между треками представляет собой 160 минут беспрерывного и незабываемого музыкального приключения с Astral Projection.

1980 год. Место действия - Израиль. Лиор Перлмуттер и Янив Хавив, оба девяти лет отроду, встретились впервые в школе. В это же самое время молодой человек по имени Ави Ниссим начинал заниматься ди-джеингом, а также перфомансом в тяжелых индустриальных командах по всему Израилю. Два года спустя в возрасте одиннадцати лет Лиор начинает свои первые эксперименты на синтезаторах, а в 1984 году вместе с Янивом они создают команду PARADOX.
Теперь перенесемся в год 1989–й. Янив в это время служит в армии. Ави, теперь уже хорошо известный ди-джей, работающий в стиле эйсид, кооперируется с Лиором, и они создают проект SFX, который играет гиги в различных электронных клубах Израиля. В это время была закончена работа над дебютным альбомом SFX, но по ряду причин он так и не вышел. В 1990 году ребята сделали очередной трек, который назывался "Monstermama" и вышел на молодом техно–лейбле Music Man в Бельгии.
В 1991 году они решили попробовать продвинуть свою музыку в Нью–Йорке. Ави провел там достаточно короткое время, после чего вернулся в Израиль и продолжил заниматься творчеством. Лиор же остался и работал в студии в качестве продюсера и ремикшера. В 1992 году ребята издали четыре сингла на American X–Rave Records. Пока Лиор находился в Штатах, Ави объединился с Янивом и новым парнем, которого звали Guy Sabbag. Опять же под псевдонимом SFX они издали сингл "Another World". В начале 1994 года Лиор вернулся в Израиль для продолжения работы в SFX и их новом лейбле Trust In Trance. Эти четверо ребят и завершили первый изданный альбом SFX "Trust In Trance Vol. 1". Этот альбом быстро стал популярным и занял в израильских хит–парадах почетное второе место. Музыку, которую делали ASTRAL PROJECTION, очень хорошо восприняли трансовые ди–джеи, что способствовало росту популярности группы. Оба этих альбома в дальнейшем были переизданы на двойном CD на Smart Records, а множество треков из них вошли во всевозможные трэнсовые компиляции, лицензированные такими известными компаниями, как BMG, Distance, TIP, Blue Room, Transient, Rumour, Perfecto Fluoro, MCA и многими другими.
Вскоре вышел третий альбом группы "Trust In Tance 3", причем незадолго до его выхода большинство музыкальных журналов, посвященных электронной музыке, охарактеризовали эту работу, как лучшую в стиле psychedelic trance, а самих ASTRAL PROJECTION нарекли королями трэнса. Феноменальная поддержка музыки проекта ведущими европейскими, и в частности английскими, ди–джеями, а также выход анимированного видеосингла "People Can Fly" нисколько не уменьшили, а наоборот, увеличили популярность группы.
В течение 1998 года ASTRAL PROJECTION провели с большим успехом более тридцати концертов в Израиле, Англии, Франции, Голландии, Греции, Германии и Скандинавии. Четвертый альбом "Astral Files" стал альбомом, где каждый трек являлся классикой. Комбинация хорошо продуманного бита, жирных трэнсовых пэдов и сэмплов, а также восточная мелодика и гармония — вот что сделало этот альбом таким, какой он есть. Издан он был на британском лейбле Transient. После издания четвертого альбома Янив также покинул группу, а Лиор и Ави между тем завершили пятый альбом "Dancing Galaxy", явивший собой коллекцию эпического трэнса.
По словам Лиора и Ави, все музыкальные обязанности они делят пополам. Ави занимается программированием синтезаторов и звукоинженерией, Лиор же в основном работает над аранжировками. В их студии очень хорошие акустические системы, которые были сделаны самим Ави. Из аппаратуры имеется множество устройств фирмы Roland. Это, как правило, аналоговые синтезаторы моделей Juno, JX, TR. Также используются эффект–процессоры таких известных фирм, как Lexicon и Valley, компьютеры ATARI и IBM, старый ламповый микрофон Neumann и несколько ADATТов для цифровой записи.
В 1999 году вышел альбом "Another World". 21 мая 2000 года вышел сборник лучших песен на двух CD под названием "In The Mix".
